Touch me. Why massages are non-negotiable.

Touch me. Why massages are non-negotiable.

I regularly pay strangers to rub my nude body with oils until my guard is down and I’m incredibly vulnerable…you should to. Touch is a powerful thing. The benefits of massage are endless and the combination of the physical relaxation and mental de-stressing is the ultimate goal. Regular professional massages are not cheap, it’s a luxury but I make the most of every appointment because I savor each one. In the days leading up to a session I regularly think about the upcoming 50 minutes of bliss especially if I’m having a particularly bad day.

I try not to schedule too much on my massage day so my mind can be in chill zone for as long as possible. If your spa has a sauna or steam room access the day of your massage, take advantage. Clear your mind and focus on how well you are taking care of your body. I literally picture the stress dissipate, rising away with the steam. Sounds totally yogi but $100 an hour better come with some serious benefits, not all of them at the hands of the massage therapist either. I always arrive showered and free of makeup, lotions and perfume so that whatever natural oils they are forcing into my system have a fighting chance against the onslaught of lovely scented Parabens I still guiltily slather on most days. During my massage I never force myself to clear my mind it’s simply too much pressure.

Instead, I focus on what’s happening and how great it feels, the potential benefits and I imagine its healing properties. I try to find a balance between letting go and staying conscious enough to remember the experience. For those on the fence about a full body massage I encourage you to consider a neck, shoulder or even a foot massage and experience the amazing benefits.  Our bodies are capable of amazing things, be sure to give thanks regularly.
