Energizing Through a Reiki Circle

I recently signed up for a Reiki circle workshop without having any knowledge of what type of experience I would encounter. I just read the tagline “Re-energize your mind and body” and I was in!  I didn’t want to do a google search of what Reiki really entailed because I wanted to go in with an open and fresh mind. I waited outside the studio with 9 other women who ranged from Reiki pros to newbies such as myself.  The workshop was provided by a man who was a Reiki master and one of the studios female yoga instructors.

We were briefed on the benefits of Reiki and its actual meaning (a cleansing of energies) and warned that many of us may experience hot/cold feelings while others would not experience any type of feelings at all.  We all laid down with our heads facing the two instructors in a semi-circle. The room was dimmed and we placed a yoga bolsters under our knees and blankets under our heads and over our body.  The room was extremely quiet and we were all to remain laying down with our eyes closed for the full hour and a half session.  The instructors worked individually with each client so most of the time the rest of us were just laying on the floor probably questioning ourselves “when is it my turn?”

Finally, it was my turn! I felt the manly hands touch my head and shoulders and a cold wind flow through the right upper side of my body and I started to mentally freak out. Did I just experience an out of body experience? Where did this cold air come from? Did he possess some kind of trickery and was able to cleanse me? I couldn’t take the intrigue anymore and as I peeked, I notice some device in his mouth which expelled the cold air out. Darn! I had created this amazing story in my head which I was going to share with the world but now I am just wondering how I can purchase this cool device to cool me off during this blazing summer.  Just then as I feel him stand up and walk away, I get this weird heat in my body and I start having a coughing attack in the middle of the class.

The room remains quiet except for my coughing attach which puts me in freaking out mode.  I am no longer in a meditative state but in a panicking state. Am I so congested with bad energy that I am coughing it out? Are other people mentally shushing me? Am I going to get kicked out for disrupting the experience? After much holding my breath, I was able to control my cough and attempt to relax again. The instructors are now circling the room for the second time and as I hear them working on a person close to me…I again feel the warmth in my body and go into another coughing attack. Now, I sit up because I am perplexed with what I should do. I look around and everyone is laying peacefully, the instructors look at me reassuring me it’s okay but I still question if I should run out of the room.  I start to hold my breath again in an attempt to control it but to no avail.

The master reiki instructor comes to me and provides napkins and leans me back down to a laying position. They both come and work with me; one holding my feet while the other works on my upper body. I start wondering if I am internally sick and they are trying to cure me?  Do I have such bad energies that they are trying to do some type of exorcism on me? I could not relax for the remaining portion of the workshop because I started creating all these ideas in my head with the possibilities of what could be wrong with me. The workshop was over and I went home more confused than ever. I experienced cold-like symptoms which lasted for about a week. I  quickly researched the internet and found other people had the same experience in their Reiki cleansing. So after much research, I concluded that I was slowly expelling my bad energies and my aura was cleansing itself. That, or my body was already getting sick and it was all pure coincidence…who knows?
